RESUMEN

This paper proposes a model predictive control (MPC) scheme based on linear parameter variation to enhance the damping control of speed-dependent active suspensions. The controller is developed by introducing a speed-dependent term, specifically front- and rear-wheel time delays, to the half-car model using the Padé approximation. Subsequently, the model is augmented with time-varying parameter dependence. An adaptive Kalman filter based on variance matching is employed to estimate system states affected by imprecise sensor measurement noise. Finally, a set of explicit control laws incorporating road preview information and available vehicle speed are determined offline using multi-parameter linear programming (mp-LP), simplifying online implementation to searching for optimal solutions in a lookup table. Simulation results demonstrate a significant improvement in active suspension control under changing vehicle speeds compared to passive control.

Bee pollen, derived from various plant sources, is renowned for its nutritional and bioactive properties, aroma, and taste. This study examined the bee pollen with the highest yield in China obtained from four plant species, namely Brassica campestris (Bc), Nelumbo nucifera (Nn), Camellia japonica (Cj), and Fagopyrum esculentum (Fe), using fast e-nose and e-tongue technology to analyze their flavor chemistry. Results showed substantial differences in scent profiles among the varieties, with distinct odor compounds identified for each, including n-butanol, decanal, and ethanol, in Bc, Nn, and Cj, respectively. The primary odorants in Fe consist of E-2-hexen-1-ol and (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol. Additionally, e-tongue analysis revealed seven distinct tastes in bee pollen samples: AHS, PKS, CTS, NMS, CPS, ANS, and SCS, with variations in intensity across each taste. The study also found correlations between taste components and specific odor compounds, providing insights for enhancing product quality control in bee pollen processing.

RESUMEN

To compare the analgesic efficacy and adverse events of proximal versus distal ACB for adults undergoing knee arthroplasty, we searched PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, and Embase to identify all eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The study quality of the RCTs was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool. Heterogeneity among studies was examined by Cochrane Q test. Our primary outcomes were pain intensity at rest/during movement and morphine consumption. Statistical analyses were conducted by RevMan Software. Seven eligible studies involving 400 subjects were included in this meta-analysis with 202 participants in the proximal ACB group and 198 participants in the distal ACB group. The results demonstrated that proximal ACB provided significantly better pain relief at rest at 2 h (SMD -0.27, 95% CI -0.54 to -0.01, four trials, 222 participants, I2 = 0, p = 0.04) and 24 h (SMD -0.28, 95% CI -0.48 to -0.08, seven trials, 400 participants, I2 = 0, p = 0.006) following the surgery. We found no evidence of a difference in postoperative pain intensity at other timepoints. Furthermore, we noted no evidence of a difference in cumulative morphine consumption and occurrence of adverse events. Proximal ACB provides better pain relief and comparable adverse effects profile compared with distal ACB. The analgesic benefit offered by proximal ACB, however, did not appear to extend beyond the first 24 h. The overall evidence level was mostly low or very low, which requires more well-organized multicenter randomized trials in the future.

Effective therapies of chronic kidney disease (CKD) are lacking due to the unclear molecular pathogenesis. Previous single omics-studies have described potential molecular regulation mechanism of CKD only at the level of transcription or translation. Therefore, this study generated an integrated transcriptomic and proteomic profile to provide deep insights into the continuous transcription-translation process during CKD. The comprehensive datasets identified 14,948 transcripts and 6423 proteins, 233 up-regulated and 364 down-regulated common differentially expressed genes of transcriptome and proteome were selected to further combined bioinformatics analysis. The obtained results revealed reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism and antioxidant system due to imbalance of mitochondria and peroxisomes were significantly repressed in CKD. Overall, this study presents a valuable multi-omics analysis that sheds light on the molecular mechanisms underlying CKD. SIGNIFICANCE: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive and irreversible condition that results in abnormal kidney function and structure, and is ranked 18th among the leading causes of death globally, leading to a significant societal burden. Hence, there is an urgent need for research to detect new, sensitive, and specific biomarkers. Omics-based studies offer great potential to identify underlying disease mechanisms, aid in clinical diagnosis, and develop novel treatment strategies for CKD. Previous studies have mainly focused on the regulation of gene expression or protein synthesis in CKD, thereby compelling us to conduct a meticulous analysis of transcriptomic and proteomic data from the UUO mouse model. Here, we have performed a unified analysis of CKD model by integrating transcriptomes and protein suites for the first time. Our study contributes to a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis of CKD and provides a basis for subsequent disease management and drug development.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcomes after neonatal cardiac surgery at our institute, and identify factors associated with operative mortality. METHODS: We examined 224 neonates who underwent cardiac surgery at a single institution from 2013 to 2022. Relevant data, such as demographic information, operative details, and postoperative records, were gathered from medical and surgical records. Our primary focus was on the operative mortality. RESULTS: Median age and weight at surgery were 12 (7-20) days and 3.4 (3.0-3.8) kg, respectively. Overall mortality was 14.3% (32/224). Mortality rates showed improvement over time (2013-2017 vs. 2018-2022), with rates decreasing from 21.9% to 10.6% (p = 0.023). ECMO use, extubation failure, lactate > 4.8 mmol/l and VIS > 15.5 on 24 h after operation were significantly associated with operative mortality, according to multivariate logistic regression analysis. Patients admitted to the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) before surgery and those with prenatal diagnosis showed lower operative mortality. Median follow-up time of 192 hospital survivors was 28.0 (11.0-62.3) months. 10 patients experienced late deaths, and 7 patients required reinterventions after neonatal cardiac surgery. Risk factors for composite end-point of death and reintervention on multivariable analysis were: surgical period (HR = 0.230, 95% CI 0.081-0.654; p = 0.006), prolonged ventilation (HR = 4.792, 95% CI 1.296-16.177; p = 0.018) and STAT categories 3-5 (HR = 5.936, 95% CI 1.672-21.069; p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: Our institution has observed improved surgical outcomes in neonatal cardiac surgery over the past five years with low mortality, but late death and reintervention remain necessary in some patients. The location and prenatal diagnosis prior to surgery may affect the outcomes of neonates undergoing congenital heart disease operations.

BACKGROUND: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a frequent complication following hip arthroplasty. There still has been a lack of studies analyzing the perioperative risk factors of DVT following hip arthroplasty via direct anterior approach (DAA). METHODS: Patients who underwent unilateral primary hip arthroplasty via DAA in our hospital from August 2015 to January 2022 were included. Patients' data, including demographic data, clinical features, past medical history, operative data, and laboratory data, were analyzed and compared between patients with and without DVT. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the independent risk factors. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to assess the best cutoff value of continuous variables with statistical significance. RESULT: A total of 651 patients were included. The incidence of DVT before and after hip arthroplasty was 12.7% and 6.7%, respectively. Logistic regression analysis indicated that age ≥ 65 years (OR 4.594, 95% CI 1.994-10.587), women (OR 2.331, 95% CI 1.285-4.227), and cerebral infarction (OR 1.984, 95% CI 1.138-3.460) were independent risk factors for preoperative DVT. And age ≥ 65 years (OR 4.859, 95% CI 1.062-22.226), tumor (OR 3.622, 95% CI 1.108-11.841), and preoperative D-dimer (OR 1.040, 95% CI 1.004-1.078) were risk factors for postoperative DVT. The ROC curve analysis showed that the best cutoff value of preoperative D-dimer for the diagnosis of postoperative DVT is 1.44 mg/L. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of DVT in patients undergoing DAA hip arthroplasty was low and the occurrence of DVT before and after unilateral primary hip arthroplasty performed through DAA was related to multiple factors.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis (OP) poses a significant clinical challenge with escalating morbidity. This study explores Circ_HECW2 expression in OP patients and its regulatory role in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced osteoblast apoptosis. METHODS: Circ_HECW2 expression in OP patient serum and healthy controls was quantified using RT-qPCR. Diagnostic value of Circ_HECW2 for OP was assessed via ROC curve. Pearson's correlation model examined associations between indicators. Human osteoblasts HFOB1.19, treated with LPS, were analyzed for Circ_HECW2, pre-miR-1224, miR-1224-5p, and PDK2 mRNA levels. TUNEL assay determined cell apoptosis and Western blot assessed cleaved-caspase-3 protein levels. RNase R resistance assay and actinomycin D assay confirmed Circ_HECW2's cyclic structure. RNA pull-down and dual-luciferase reporter assay verified binding relationships between Circ_HECW2 and miR-1224 and between miR-1224-5p and PDK2. RESULTS: Circ_HECW2 exhibited elevated expression in OP patients with diagnostic significance and a negative correlation with lumbar T-score. LPS co-culture increased Circ_HECW2 expression in HFOB1.19 cells, significantly elevating apoptosis index and cleaved-caspase-3. Circ_HECW2 downregulation inhibited HFOB1.19 apoptosis, reduced pre-miR-1224 expression, and elevated mature miR-1224-5p. Circ_HECW2 bound to pre-miR-1224, and inhibiting miR-1224-5p reversed the effect of Circ_HECW2 downregulation on osteoblast apoptosis. miR-1224-5p targeted PDK2 transcription. CONCLUSION: Circ_HECW2, highly expressed in OP, holds diagnostic significance and reflects disease severity. Circ_HECW2 reduces mature miR-1224-5p by binding to pre-miR-1224, upregulating PDK2, and facilitating LPS-induced osteoblast apoptosis.

The relationship between mental health and perceived social support has been well-established in previous studies. While previous research indicates that perceived social support is related to prosocial behavior, the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. In order to address this gap, a recent study investigated the mediating effects of moral identity and moral sensitivity on the relationship between perceived social support and prosocial behavior. Specifically, the study surveyed 978 college students using a questionnaire to examine the relationship between these variables. The results of the study showed that, after controlling for gender and age, perceived social support, moral identity, and moral sensitivity were significantly and positively correlated, all of which were also significantly and positively related to prosocial behavior. In addition, the study found that perceived social support was able to influence prosocial behavior through both independent mediation by moral identity and moral sensitivity, as well as through chain mediation. The findings of this study contribute to our understanding of the factors that shape prosocial behavior and offer suggestions for promoting such behavior in individuals.

BACKGROUND: The triglyceride glucose-body mass (TyG-BMI) index is acknowledged as both a reliable indicator of the risk of cardiovascular disease and an accurate surrogate biomarker for evaluating insulin resistance (IR). The importance of the TyG-BMI index among people with heart failure (HF), however, requires more investigation. The objective of this study was to inquire about the relationship between HF patients' TyG-BMI index and their risk of 360-day mortality. METHODS: The Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV) database provided the study's patient data, which were divided into quartiles according to their TyG-BMI index. The endpoint was mortality from all causes within 360 days. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to compare this primary endpoint amongst the four groups indicated above. The association between the TyG-BMI index and the endpoint was investigated using restricted cubic splines and Cox proportional hazards analysis. RESULTS: The study enrolled a total of 423 patients with HF (59.2% male), of whom 70 patients (16.9%) died within 360 days. Patients with higher TyG-BMI indexes had significantly lower mortality risks, according to the Kaplan-Meier analysis (log-rank P = 0.003). Furthermore, the restricted cubic spline analysis illustrated a decrease in the risk of all-cause mortality with an increasing TyG-BMI index. Additionally, multivariable Cox proportional hazards analyses showed that the risk of 360-day death from all causes was considerably higher in the lowest quartile of TyG-BMI. In comparison to the lowest TyG-BMI group, the fully adjusted Cox model yielded a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.24 (95% CI: 0.10, 0.59; p = 0.002) for 360-day mortality. CONCLUSIONS: In patients diagnosed with HF, a lower TyG-BMI index is strongly related to a higher risk of 360-day mortality. This index can be employed to categorize the risk levels of patients with HF and predict their one-year all-cause mortality .

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the effectiveness of treprostinil in higher-risk paediatric patients with various pulmonary arterial hypertension genotypes. This study was designed to investigate the prognosis of higher-risk paediatric patients with idiopathic or heritable pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH/HPAH) after treprostinil therapy. METHODS: Children with IPAH/HPAH who were stratified as higher risk and treated with treprostinil in our centre were included as the study cohort. Those who received only oral medications were included as the reference cohort. All patients in the study cohort received PAH-related genotyping. Survival was defined as no death. Event-free survival was defined as no death, Potts shunt, or atrial septostomy. RESULTS: Forty-nine children (median age 7.7 years [interquartile range (IQR) 4.2-11.5 years], 65% female) were included in the study cohort and 48 children were included in the reference cohort; 84% of the study cohort had genetic disorders after genetic testing with a dominance of BMPR2 and ACVRL1 mutations. After a median therapy duration of 5.56 months (IQR 2.66-11.12 months), all patients were alive with significant improvements in clinical characteristics. One-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 91%, 84%, and 69%, respectively with a median follow-up duration of 19.17 months (IQR 9.7-29.79 months), which was significantly superior to the reference cohort (P = 0.038). Multivariate Cox regression analysis identified World Health Organisation functional class after therapy as a predictor for survival. There was no significant difference in survival among patients with different genotypes. CONCLUSIONS: Treprostinil can significantly improve the prognosis in children with IPAH/HPAH who are at higher risk, despite genetic backgrounds.

Although the honey produced by Lespedeza bicolor Turcz. is precious because of its medicinal value, its pharmacological mechanism is still unclear. Here, its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated murine RAW 264.7 macrophages were analyzed using targeted and non-targeted metabolomics. Results showed that twelve polyphenols were identified in L. bicolor honey using UHPLC-QQQ-MS/MS. L. bicolor honey extract could scavenge the free radicals DPPH• and ABTS+ and reduce Fe3+. Furthermore, pretreatment with L. bicolor honey extract significantly decreased NO production; suppressed the expression of COX-2, IL-10, TNF-α, and iNOS; and upregulated HO-1's expression in the cells with LPS application. UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS-based metabolomics results revealed that L. bicolor honey extract could protect against inflammatory damage caused by LPS through the reduced activation of sphingolipid metabolism and necroptosis pathways. These findings demonstrate that L. bicolor honey possesses excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.

Bee pollen is a byproduct of pollination, which is a necessary process to produce foods. However, bee pollen can induce significant food-borne allergies. We previously identified a bee pollen-derived pan-allergen in the profilin family, Bra c p. Herein, we aimed to reduce Bra c p allergenicity via protein oxidation with hydrogen peroxide and explore the changes induced. Ion-mobility mass spectrometry revealed aggregation of the oxidized product; we also found irreversible sulfonation of the free sulfhydryl group of the Bra c p Cys98 residue to a more stable cysteine derivative. A significant proportion of the α-helices in Bra c p were transformed into ß-sheets after oxidation, masking the antigenic epitopes. An immunoassay demonstrated that the IgE-binding affinity of Bra c p was decreased in vitro after oxidation. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing the application of protein oxidation to reduce the allergenicity of profilin family member in foods.

Bee pollen (BP) and royal jelly (RJ) have shown therapeutic effects against colitis, but the functional components contained therein remain elusive. Here, we used an integrated microbiomic-metabolomic strategy to clarify the mechanism by which bee pollen lipid extracts (BPL) and royal jelly lipid extracts (RJL) ameliorated dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. Lipidomic results showed that levels of ceramide (Cer), lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), phosphatidylcholine (PC), and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) were significantly higher in BPL than in RJL. The anti-inflammatory efficacy of BPL surpassed that of RJL, although both BPL and RJL could attenuate DSS-induced colitis through several mechanisms: reducing the disease activity index (DAI); decreasing histopathological damage; inhibiting the expression of genes encoding proinflammatory cytokines; improving intestinal microbial community structure, and modulating host metabolism. These findings demonstrated that BPL and RJL have great potential as functional ingredients for the production of dietary supplements to prevent early colitis.

The intergroup bias in third-party fairness maintenance includes two components: ingroup love and outgroup hate. Previous studies revealed that intergroup bias could be alleviated by high social identity complexity. This study explored the influence of the social identity complexity of parties in unfair events on intergroup bias in third-party fairness maintenance. Participants were divided into two groups and asked to choose from retention and punishment (Experiment One)/compensation (Experiment Two) to respond to unfair events presented by dictator games. To separate the components, we introduced additional unaffiliated members. Social identity complexity included single identity, presented as ingroup vs. outgroup sides of unfair events, and multiple identities, which included group identity and five additional identities. The results demonstrated that third parties tended to impose less punishment and more compensation on outgroup members under multiple than single identity conditions; however, the punishment and compensation to ingroup members exhibited no significant difference between the identity conditions. These results indicated that the multiple identities of the two sides in unfair events can reduce intergroup bias in third-party fairness maintenance, which can be achieved by reducing the outgroup hate rather than ingroup love.

Honeybees play a crucial role as pollinators for crops and are regarded as sensitive bioindicators of environmental health. The widespread use of pesticides poses a severe threat to honeybee survival. However, there is limited information available on the specific risks associated with fipronil exposure in honeybees, particularly concerning the impact on RNA methylation throughout their lifespan. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of sublethal concentrations of fipronil on RNA m6A and m5C methylations, along with the associated genes in honeybee larvae and newly emerged adults. LC-MS/MS analysis revealed a notable hypomethylation of m5C in larvae, while hypermethylation of m6A was observed in the adult brain. Significant changes in the expression of genes such as AmWTAP, AmYTHDF, AmALKBH4, AmALKBH6, AmALKBH8, AmNSUN5, AmNOP2, AmTET1, and AmYBX1 were observed in the adult brain, whereas alterations in the expression of AmNSUN2, AmMETTL14, AmALKBH1, AmALKBH4, AmALKBH6 AmALYREF, AmTET1, and AmYBX1 were observed in the larvae. Notably, the expression of AmALKBH1 was not detected in any fipronil-treated larvae, suggesting its potential as an early risk indicator for honeybee larvae in future assessments. This pioneering study provides insights into the effects of fipronil on RNA methylations in honeybees and explores the possibility of employing RNA methylation as a tool for assessing pesticide risks in this important pollinator species. These findings offer new perspectives on honeybee protection and the development of toxicity evaluation systems for pesticides.

Advances in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for congenital heart disease (CHD), the most common birth defect in China, have drastically improved survival for individuals with the disease. However, China's current health system is not well prepared to manage the growing population of people with CHD and their complex medical needs, which range from early detection of the condition and intervention for physical, neurodevelopmental, and psychosocial impairment, to long-term management of major complications and chronic health problems. Health disparities caused by long-standing regional differences in access to care pose challenges when major complications such as pulmonary hypertension arise, and when individuals with complex CHD become pregnant and give birth. Currently, no data sources track neonates, children, adolescents, and adults with CHD in China and delineate their clinical characteristics and use of health resources. This scarcity of data should warrant attention from the Chinese Government and relevant specialists in the field. In the third paper of the Series on CHD in China, we summarise key literature and current data to identify knowledge gaps and call for concerted efforts by the government, hospitals, clinicians, industries, and charitable organisations to develop an actionable, lifelong framework of congenital cardiac care that is accessible and affordable for all individuals with CHD. Objective: To investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of "tail compression fixation+suture bridge" technology under shoulder arthroscopy for treating primary tear in medial enthesis of rotator cuff. Methods: The clinical data of 11 patients with primary tear in medial enthesis of rotator cuff who met the selection criteria between October 2020 and October 2022 were retrospectively analyzed, including 3 males and 8 females, aged 39-79 years, with an average of 61.0 years. Rotator cuff injury was caused by traumatic fall in 8 cases, and the time from injury to admission was 1-4 months, with an average of 2.0 months; the remaining 3 cases had no obvious inducement. The active range of motion of the affected shoulder was limited, with an active forward flexion range of motion of (64.1±10.9)°, abduction of (78.1±6.4)°, internal rotation of (48.2±6.6)°, and external rotation of (41.8±10.5)°; 5 cases had shoulder stiffness. The preoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) score was 7.8±0.8 and the American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score was 23.9±6.4. The patients were treated with "tail compression fixation+suture bridge" technology under shoulder arthroscopy, and the pain and functional recovery were evaluated by VAS score, ASES score, and active range of motion of shoulder joint at last follow-up; MRI was performed after operation, and the integrity of rotator cuff was evaluated by Sugaya classification system. Results: All the 11 patients were followed up 2-22 months, with an average of 13.5 months. All incisions healed by first intention, and there was no complication such as infection, rotator cuff re-tear, and anchor falling off. At last follow-up, the VAS score was 0.8±0.7 and the ASES score was 93.5±4.2, which significantly improved when compared with those before operation ( P<0.05). All 11 patients had no significant swelling in the shoulders, and the active range of motion was (165.1±8.8)° in flexion, (75.3±8.4)° in abduction, (56.6±5.5)° in internal rotation, and (51.8±4.0)° in external rotation, which significantly improved when compared with those before operation ( P<0.05). Shoulder MRI showed adequate tendon thickness and good continuity in 9 cases, including 4 cases with partial high signal area; and 2 cases with inadequate tendon thickness but high continuity and partial high signal area. According to Sugaya classification system, there were 4 cases of type 1 (36.4%), 5 cases of type 2 (45.5%), and 2 cases of type 3 (18.1%). Conclusion: For the patients with primary tear in medial enthesis of rotator cuff, the "tail compression fixation+suture bridge" technology under shoulder arthroscopy is simple and effective.

AIMS: Despite shared pathophysiological mechanisms, patients with idiopathic/heritable pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH/HPAH) have a poorer prognosis than those with PAH after congenital heart defect repair. Ventricular adaption remains unclear and could provide a basis for explaining differences in clinical outcomes. The aim of this prospective study was to assess clinical status, haemodynamic profile, and biventricular adaptation to PAH in children with various forms of PAH. METHODS AND RESULTS: Consecutive patients with IPAH/HPAH or post-operative PAH were prospectively recruited (n = 64). All patients underwent a comprehensive, protocolized assessment including functional assessment, measurement of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels, invasive measurements, and a cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) assessment. A cohort of age- and sex-matched healthy subjects served as controls. Patients with post-operative PAH had a better functional class (61.5 vs. 26.3% in Class I/II, P = 0.02) and a longer 6-min walk distance (320 ± 193 vs. 239 ± 156 m, P = 0.008) than IPAH/HPAH. While haemodynamic parameters were not significantly different between IPAH/HPAH and post-operative patients, post-operative patients with PAH presented with higher left ventricular volumes and better right ventricular function compared with patients with IPAH/HPAH (P < 0.05). On correlation analyses, left ventricular volumetric parameters were highly correlated with BNP and 6-min walk test distance in this population. CONCLUSION: Despite comparable haemodynamic profiles, patients with post-operative PAH had less functional limitation than their IPAH/HPAH counterparts. This is potentially related to the differential biventricular adaptation pattern evident on CMR with better myocardial contractility and higher left ventricular volumes in post-operative patients with PAH, highlighting the importance of ventriculo-ventricular interaction in the setting of PAH.
